In the first quarter of 2021, Belgians spent the most money on homes in the Spanish province of Alicante of all foreigners. For the first time, more money came from our country than from the United Kingdom. Surprising, but it may be temporary.

We know the province of Alicante from the city of the same name, but also from other attractions such as Benidorm, Dénia, Calpé and Torrevieja on the Costa Blanca. An attractive region for Belgians who want to buy a holiday home. Belgian real estate agent New construction in Spain noted in recently published figures for the first quarter that our compatriots have not lost their lust for the region despite corona.

In the first quarter of this year, Belgians bought 423 homes in the province of Alicante for a total of 85 million euros. Our compatriots thus spent more money than the inhabitants of the United Kingdom (81.3 million euros). With 513, the British have bought more homes, but at a lower price on average. “We are in the lead for the first time,” says Freyke Van Looveren of Nieuwbouw in Spain.

“It's surprising. Normally, the British buy much more,” says Marleen De Vijt of specialized real estate company Azull, who does not believe it until she has looked at the figures. She notes. “The logical explanation seems to me that they have barely been able to travel due to corona measures. So it could be a very temporary evolution.” Another side note: in Belgium, the United Kingdom and a whole host of other countries, the number of buyers has fallen compared to the same period in previous years. The British bought 815 houses in the first quarter of 2020 and even 1,037 in 2019. The corona pandemic has resulted in the worst first quarter in years.Source: Andreas Rotty - Gazet van Antwerpen
